Departures on vacation: on the road in complete safety – In the spotlight

The day of leaving on vacation is approaching. The whole family can’t wait to get to their destination. But before that, so that your trip takes place in the best conditions, be uncompromising on safety. Here are a few tips.

First of all, before getting behind the wheel, rest. Taking the road with a lack of sleep, or deliberately staying awake for a long time in order to cover more kilometres, cause the same negative effects on the driver’s abilities as the presence of alcohol in the blood: 17 hours of active wakefulness is equivalent to 0, 5 g of alcohol per liter of blood.

Before leaving and during the lunch break, prefer protein foods (ham, cold meat, hard-boiled eggs) and avoid fat or sweets (sausage, meat in sauce, chocolate bars). Indeed, anything that is difficult to digest promotes reduced alertness. On the way, drink water regularly to stay hydrated. Especially if it’s hot. Also offer it to all passengers and especially to children.

Question of common sense, in the car, everyone buckles his seatbelt, in front as in the back. Regularly check that your children are properly restrained. And no question of passing the arm above the belt. Also remember to activate child safety to lock the rear doors.

Imperative breaks

To keep your attention at its peak, stop every 2 hours or so. Get out of the car and take the opportunity to stretch your legs, drink some water… If you feel sleepy coming (visual disturbances, yawning, stiff neck, irritability, slow reactions…), don’t wait to do pause. If you can’t pass the wheel to another driver, take the time to sleep quietly, even if only 15 to 20 minutes. Coffee or a “breath of air” would not be enough to “wake you up”.
