Denver Nuggets Make History as NBA Champions with Nikola Jokic Leading the Way

June 12 was a historic day for the Nuggets team, crowned NBA champion for the first time in its history. Better still: it was the first time that the Denver franchise, carried by its star player Nikola Jokic, made its way to the final. Faced with the Miami Heat of Jimmy Butler, the Nuggets offered themselves a 94 to 98 victory, in front of their public.

Logically, the 28-year-old Serbian player was elected “Most Valuable Player (MVP)” of this series in 5 games, thus winning the Bill Russell trophy. But Jokic has little interest in individual awards… so the cup was quickly deposited in the office of Sparky Gonzales, the Nuggets’ equipment manager… To stay there.

Interviewed by ESPN a few days following his coronation, the double regular season MVP arrived without his trophy. He soberly explained that he did not know where he was and only picked him up during the parade in the city of Denver on the Thursday following the coronation. A usual detachment for the player, who had already shown no particular euphoria during the decisive victory once morest the Heat and obtaining his first ring. Jokic wanted to “go home” to Serbia.
