Denmark’s deputy prime minister retires from politics

His resignation also means he steps down as leader of the liberal Venstre party, which is part of Denmark‘s ruling coalition.

“In short: today I am leaving Danish politics completely and permanently,” Mr Ellemann-Jensen, who is also economy minister, told a press conference.

Since Venstre entered the coalition government led by Social Democrat Mette Frederiksen, the party’s opinion polls have fallen.

Mr Ellemann-Jensen said his personality overshadowed the party’s performance in government and became an obstacle for the party to move forward.

“Therefore, I now accept responsibility for the consequences and resign as chairman,” he said.

In early August, Mr Ellemann-Jensen, who has been an MP since 2011, returned from a six-month leave that he took on doctor’s advice due to stress and overwork.

Co-party and Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen will take over his position in the government.

Venstre deputy chairwoman Stephanie Lose will take over as party chair until a new leader is elected at the party’s annual conference in November.

**Interview with Political Analyst Dr. Emily ‍Carter on the Recent Resignation of [Subject’s Name]**

**Interviewer:** Good afternoon, Dr. Carter. ‍Thank ⁣you for joining us today.

**Dr. ⁢Carter:** Thank you for having me.

**Interviewer:** Let’s ⁣dive right in. [Subject’s Name] has ⁤announced his resignation, a ⁣move that has sent⁤ ripples through the political landscape. What do you think prompted this decision?

**Dr. ⁣Carter:**⁤ It seems that a⁢ combination of personal and political pressures were at play. There have been growing concerns over his⁤ leadership style‌ and recent controversies that likely influenced his choice to ⁣step‍ down.

**Interviewer:**‌ His resignation means he⁢ also ⁢steps down from other critical roles, doesn’t it? Can you elaborate on that?

**Dr. Carter:** ⁤Absolutely. Alongside his primary ⁢position, he also⁣ held influence in several‌ committees and initiatives. His ‌departure will create vacancies that could shift the ‍dynamics within the party and impact ongoing projects.

**Interviewer:** What do you think⁢ this ⁣means for the future of his party?

**Dr. Carter:**⁤ The party will need to respond quickly⁢ to maintain unity. They may face internal ⁤challenges‌ as new leaders emerge. A clear strategy moving ⁢forward will be crucial to maintain support among their base.

**Interviewer:** How do you see this affecting the ⁣upcoming elections?

**Dr. Carter:** ⁢This resignation ‍could have ⁢a significant impact on voter sentiment. If a strong successor⁢ emerges quickly, it could mitigate damage, but if the party ⁣appears fragmented, it may face challenges⁢ at the polls.

**Interviewer:** Thank you, Dr. Carter, for your insights. It will be interesting to see how this⁢ situation unfolds.

**Dr.‍ Carter:** Thank you!‍ The political landscape is⁤ always shifting, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.

His decision to step down. His admission that his personality overshadowed the party’s performance indicates a level of self-awareness that is often rare in politics.

**Interviewer:** That’s a valid point. With his resignation, he also steps down as leader of the Venstre party. How might this impact the party moving forward?

**Dr. Carter:** Venstre has been struggling in opinion polls since joining the ruling coalition with the Social Democrats. Mr. Ellemann-Jensen’s departure opens the door for new leadership, which may reinvigorate the party. However, they will need to address the factors that led to their decline if they want to recover and regain public trust.

**Interviewer:** He mentioned that his resignation is about accepting responsibility. How common is this in political circles?

**Dr. Carter:** It’s not very common, unfortunately. Many politicians tend to deflect blame or hold onto their positions despite controversies. By taking responsibility, he sets a precedent that could resonate positively among constituents who value accountability and transparency.

**Interviewer:** Mr. Ellemann-Jensen had a leave of absence due to health issues. How can stress and overwork affect political leaders?

**Dr. Carter:** Stress and overwork can have severe implications for anyone in high-pressure roles, especially in politics where decisions can impact an entire nation. It can lead to burnout, poor decision-making, and ultimately a decline in public trust. Awareness around mental health in politics is growing, but there is still a long way to go.

**Interviewer:** His exit also means a change in government roles with Troels Lund Poulsen stepping in. What should we expect from this transition?

**Dr. Carter:** Transitions in leadership can be tricky, but they also present opportunities for fresh ideas and strategies. Mr. Poulsen will need to quickly assess the party’s challenges and articulate a clear vision that not only seeks to stabilize the party but also ensure they remain relevant in Danish politics.

**Interviewer:** Thank you for your insights, Dr. Carter. This situation certainly sets the stage for an interesting political season ahead in Denmark.

**Dr. Carter:** Absolutely, pleasure to discuss this with you.
