Denmark takes snuff measures – will reduce the amount of nicotine

According to the bill, which will be voted on when Parliament opens next week, in future only 9 milligrams of nicotine per snuff bag will be allowed. This is revealed in a press release from the Danish Ministry of Health.

– We are now setting a limit on how much nicotine can be in nicotine pouches, which are unfortunately far too popular among children and young people. We will continuously assess whether there is a need to adjust the limit, says Minister of Health Sophie Løhde (V).

Today, there are no limits on how much nicotine can be in each bag, and it varies from a few milligrams to as much as 35 milligrams. However, according to the Ministry of Health, 10 milligrams is the most popular strength.

By comparison, a cigarette has around 1 to 2 milligrams.

The proportion of children and young people in Denmark who use smokeless nicotine products has increased dramatically in recent years. About half of young people between the ages of 15 and 17 use such products with a strength of between 10 and 14 milligrams, writes the Ministry of Health.

– Children and young people are particularly sensitive to nicotine and become addicted more quickly than adults. Therefore, we have a special responsibility to protect them from these products, says Løhde.

It is also proposed to raise the prices by around 12 Danish kroner.
