Dengue Outbreaks in Europe – Latest Updates and Data from Italy, France, and Spain

1. Dengue

1.1. Italy

As of December 4, 82 cas indigenous dengue fever had been recorded in Italy in the province of Lodi (41 cas), Rome (38 cases in the metropolis of Rome and 1 box Anzio) et Latina (2 cases).

1.2. France

Eight foci of indigenous transmission dengue representative 43 cas were identified in France this year. For each of these outbreaks, entomological and epidemiological investigations were immediately implemented as well as vector control actions.

In the region Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur : 3 outbreaks / 16 cases

  • An outbreak of 4 cases of dengue fever was identified in Gardanne in Bouches-du-Rhône (13), the start dates for the signs of these cases are between the second half of July and mid-August. This episode is closed.
  • An outbreak of 2 cases was identified in Nice in the Alpes-Maritimes (06), the start dates for signs of cases are between mid-August and mid-September. The cases have reported several potential places of exposure, Nice remains the most likely hypothesis concerning their contamination. This episode is closed.
  • An outbreak of 10 cases was identified in Boulbon in Bouches-du-Rhône (13), the start dates for the signs of these cases are between the end of July and the end of September. This episode is closed.

In Occitania : 3 outbreaks / 22 cases
• An outbreak of 11 cases was identified in a limited area of Perpignan in the Pyrénées Orientales (66), the dates of start of the signs of these cases are between the end of July and mid-August. This episode is closed.
• An outbreak of 9 cases was identified in Gagnières in Gard (30). The start dates for signs in these cases are between the end of August and the end of September. This episode is closed.
• An outbreak of 2 cases was identified in Montpellier. These cases began showing signs between mid-September and October 1. This episode is closed.

In Auvergne Rhône-Alpes : an outbreak of 2 cases was identified in Bourg-lès-Valence in Drôme (26). These cases began to show signs between late August and mid-September. This episode is closed.

In Ile-de-France : an outbreak of 3 cases was identified in Limeil-Brévannes (94). These cases began showing signs in September. This is the first source of indigenous transmission in Ile-de-France. This episode is closed.

1.3. Spain

In February 2023Germany reported two cases of dengue fever (1 confirmed and 1 probable), as well as 4 cases consistent with epidemiological links, in German residents with a history of travel to Ibiza, in Spain, during the incubation period. The confirmed case is a 27-year-old woman who spent the month of August 2022 (23-30) in Ibiza with her partner and her 14-month-old daughter; all three began showing symptoms on August 31, but diagnostic testing was only carried out on the woman, in whom the diagnosis of dengue was confirmed by detection of specific IgM antibodies and viral antigen. The probable case is a 37-year-old woman who traveled to Ibiza, in the same locality as the case described, with her partner and her 9-year-old son in October 2022 (6 to 13). The woman started showing symptoms on October 13, her son on October 12 and her partner on October 15. Only the mother visited the health services and the diagnosis of dengue was made only by the detection of IgM antibodies. Surveillance of imported cases identified a probable index case from Mexico who began showing symptoms on August 11 and who stayed in the same locality as the two described cases between August 11 and 31.

In CataloniaSpain, early August 2023the first case of indigenous transmission of dengue was detected this year, in the Tarragona region. Subsequently, in early October, another case was reported in the Maresme region. On October 20, a third suspected case of dengue fever was reported, also in the Maresme region, which was later laboratory confirmed. Of the three cases, only two required hospital admission and were subsequently sent home.

2. Chikungunya : No cases of indigenous chikungunya have been reported this year in Europe according to theECDC.

3. Zika : No cases of autochthonous Zika have been reported in France and Italy this year.
