Dengue Outbreaks in Africa: Updates from Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritius, Senegal, Sudan, and Chad

A total of 16,492 cases (158 confirmed; 16,334 suspected) and 71 deaths (CFR: 0.4%) of dengue were reported in the 13 regions.

Ivory Coast : A dengue epidemic is underway in Ivory Coast. A total of 2,414 cases were reported between June 19 and August 19, 2023, including 235 confirmed cases and no deaths.

Ethiopia : Since the last update (September 22, 2023), EPHI has reported nine new suspected cases and no new deaths from dengue. A total of 10,156 cases (127 confirmed; 10,029 suspected) and four deaths (CFR: 0.03%) were reported in four of Ethiopia’s 11 regions. The majority (88%) of cases were reported in the Afar region.

Mali : Since the last update (September 22, 2023), the Ministry of Health has reported 176 new cases (12 confirmed; 164 suspected) and no deaths from dengue. A total of 253 cases (24 confirmed; 229 suspected) and no deaths of dengue fever were reported in nine of Mali’s seventy-five districts. Two serotypes were isolated from 18 positive samples: DENV1 (7 cases) and DENV-3 (11 cases).

Maurice : Since the last update (September 22, 2023), the Ministry of Health reported one new confirmed case of dengue and no new deaths. A total of 261 confirmed cases (249 local cases; 12 imported cases) and no deaths have been reported in the two islands: Mauritius (190 local cases; 12 imported cases) and Rodrigues (59; 0).

During the last epidemiological week (ending September 17, 2023), 92 suspected cases of dengue were reported, 9 confirmed cases and no deaths. Four provinces are affected, namely Ouaddai, Wadi-Fira, Ndjamenaet They. The Ouaddaï province, which is considered the epicenter of the epidemic, is particularly affected with 75% of cases.

Angola (3 cases in 2023), Egypt (578 cases in 2023), Guinea (6 cases in 2023) and Sao Tome and Principe (1,227 cases in 2023) have not reported new cases in recent weeks.
