“Dengue Outbreak in Ethiopia’s Afar Region: Updates and Prevention Strategies”

2023-05-14 19:05:00

In Ethiopiaaccording to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), an outbreak of dengue has been reported in the Afar regionin the northeast of the country.

More than 1,000 suspected dengue fever cases in Mile and Adar were estimated as of April 28.

The area is already struggling with the spread of malaria due to flooding and standing water, which become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

The situation remains worrying, as coordination and surveillance systems are insufficient, response mechanisms are not functioning, health systems are weak, especially due to the shortage of medicines, medical supplies and chemicals to spray, as well as the shortage of health personnel (which has been affected by dengue fever), insufficient logistics and the need to scale up interventions, especially in terms of community awareness.
