Press release from the prefecture

DENGUE FUE IN REUNION: A new communication campaign to raise awareness of preventive measures

From November 14 to 27, 12 cases of dengue have been recorded, once morest 3 cases for the previous fortnight. The number of cases is increasing slightly but remains at a low level.

Dengue fever continued to circulate during the winter, raising fears of a possible epidemic resumption in the weeks to come, with the arrival of summer and weather conditions more favorable to the development of mosquitoes (heat, rain).

In order to raise awareness among all Reunionese, the prefecture and ARS La Réunion are launching a new communication campaign this week: ” Against dengue fever, let’s eliminate stagnant water” and “let’s continue to protect ourselves – ROUV BARO, we are at your side to advise you! », these are the two key messages of this campaign aimed at promoting the means of protection and raising public awareness of the reception of ARS teams in their yards and gardens to fight once morest mosquitoes.

Dengue fever situation as of December 8, 2022

(Public Health Data France Reunion, ARS)

Over the period, the cases were spread over 8 municipalities located mainly in the west and south of the island: Saint-Leu, La Possession, Saint-Paul, Le Tampon, les Avirons, Etang Salé, Saint-Joseph and Saint -Denis.

After four years of dengue epidemics with intensive circulation of the virus, the year 2022 was characterized by a lower number of patients and the installation of an inter-epidemic situation.

Since January 1, 2022

1,175 confirmed cases*
29,800 cases in 2021

190 emergency visits
4,124 in 2021

61 hospitalizations
1,140 in 2021

2 deaths directly related to dengue fever
21 in 2021

* following data consolidation – Data in 2021 at the same period

Traffic remained at a low level during the winter of 2022.

Vector control actions, associated with the appearance of meteorological phenomena less favorable to the development of mosquitoes and the possible acquired immunity of the population in certain districts, have made it possible to reduce the number of cases.

Anti-Vectorial Control service teams working alongside Reunion residents to advise them

The missions of the agents of the Anti-Vector Control service of the ARS:

Home visits to raise awareness throughout the year

advice on eliminating mosquito breeding sites (mosquito nests) in yards and gardens

distribution of repellents to priority audiences

An intervention around confirmed dengue fever cases

An intervention is carried out around each location of the dengue fever case reported by the surveillance system (analyzes carried out by the laboratories):

manual elimination of breeding sites

awareness and advice on preventive measures, encouragement to consult a doctor in the event of symptoms

distribution of repellents to priority audiences

· Mosquito control actions by insecticide (deltamethrin) and biological (Bti) treatment, carried out during the day by certified agents in yards and gardens according to specific protocols. They make it possible to eliminate mosquitoes which can be contaminating and thus limit the risks of propagation of the disease.

Immediate mobilization as soon as the first clusters of dengue cases appear

treatment actions around the homes concerned

information and increased awareness of the population, students in schools and health professionals to promote individual protection measures (elimination of breeding sites, use of repellents, mosquito nets, etc.)

supplemented by public sanitation actions carried out by municipalities and intermunicipalities

The prefecture and the ARS continue to mobilize all players (local authorities, associations, private companies, etc.) and to support awareness-raising actions (public health interventions in local authorities, information in schools, commitment of companies, collection campaigns of waste…).

Launch of a new communication campaign

Campaign objective
