Dengue Fever Rapid Kit Testing at National Quarantine Stations – Protecting Safe Overseas Travel for Citizens in Korea

Starting this year, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency will expand dengue fever rapid kit testing at national quarantine stations (13) throughout the year to ensure safe overseas travel for citizens.

This is a strengthened measure to preemptively monitor patients coming from overseas as dengue fever was additionally designated as a quarantine infectious disease at the end of last year.

Dengue fever is transmitted by being bitten by vector mosquitoes (Aedes mosquitoes, Aedes mosquitoes) infected with the dengue virus. After an incubation period of 5 to 7 days, symptoms such as fever, headache, chills, and muscle pain appear. There is still no effective vaccine or treatment, so prevention, such as preventing mosquito bites, is very important.

In 2023, the number of cases worldwide rapidly increased to the level before COVID-19, with more than 5 million cases occurring in 86 countries and more than 5,000 deaths. In Korea, the influx of dengue fever patients is also increasing from 2022 due to the revitalization of overseas travel following the recovery of daily life, and a total of 206 cases were confirmed in 2023, doubling compared to the previous year (103 cases). The inflow countries included Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

If you have suspicious symptoms (fever, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, etc.) due to a mosquito bite while visiting a high-risk country where dengue fever patients are mainly imported, it is necessary to notify the quarantine officer and receive a dengue fever rapid kit test. However, if the rapid kit test is a simple test and is confirmed positive, you must visit a medical institution and receive a confirmatory diagnostic test.
