Countries with dengue fever introduced from 2019 to 2023. (Provided by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency) The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency announced on the 11th that dengue fever rapid kit tests will be conducted at 13 national quarantine stations at airports and ports across the country starting on the 12th. This is a measure following the additional designation of dengue fever as a quarantine infectious disease last December.

Dengue fever is transmitted by being bitten by vector mosquitoes such as Aedes aegypti and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes infected with the dengue virus. After an incubation period of 5 to 7 days, symptoms such as fever, headache, chills, and muscle pain appear.

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, last year, dengue fever rapidly increased to the level of cases before COVID-19 worldwide, with more than 5 million cases occurring in 86 countries and more than 5,000 deaths.

In Korea, the influx of dengue fever patients is also increasing from 2022 due to the revitalization of overseas travel following recovery from daily life. Last year, the number of dengue fever patients doubled to 206 compared to the previous year (103). The inflow countries were Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, and Indonesia. In particular, in September last year, there was a case where a Korean citizen who visited Bangladesh for business purposes died there from dengue fever.

An official from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said, “Dengue fever has a rapidly increasing fatality rate when reinfected, so special caution is required if you frequently visit an area where it is endemic. If you have suspicious symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or muscle pain following being bitten by a mosquito while visiting a risky country, contact a quarantine officer. “You must be informed of this and be sure to undergo a dengue fever rapid kit test,” he said.

Rapid kit tests are conducted on symptomatic patients and those who wish to be tested. However, the rapid kit test is a simple test, and if confirmed positive, you must visit a medical institution to receive a confirmatory diagnostic test.

Director Ji Young-mi of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said, “There is still no effective vaccine or treatment for dengue fever, so prevention, such as preventing mosquito bites, is very important,” and “If you are planning to travel overseas, please familiarize yourself with the dengue fever prevention rules and actively utilize the dengue fever rapid kit test at the quarantine station.” “I hope so,” he said.
