Dengue Fever Outbreak in Africa: Latest Updates and Statistics from Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritius, and Sao Tome and Principe

Since the start of 2024, 3,593 cases of dengue fever (including 1,283 confirmed) and two deaths have been reported by five states: Ethiopia (1,561 cases, 0 deaths), Mali (925, 0), Mauritius (1 098.2) and Sao Tome and Principe (9.0). In its February 17 report, Africa CDC reported that 902 new cases were recorded the previous week.

Mali : Since the last update on February 9, 2024, the Ministry of Health reported 303 new cases (54 confirmed cases and 249 suspected cases) and no deaths in the Bamako and Kayes regions. A total of 925 cases (176 confirmed cases and 749 suspected cases) and no deaths due to dengue fever have been reported this year in 8 of Mali’s 10 regions. Among the confirmed cases, 2 serotypes (DENV-1 and DENV-3) were detected. This is the same prolonged outbreak that began in September 2023.

Maurice : Since the last update on February 9, 2024, the Ministry of Health reported 600 new confirmed cases and no new deaths due to dengue on 2 islands: Mauritius (332 local cases and 6 imported cases) and Rodrigues (261 cases local and 1 imported case). A total of 1,098 confirmed cases and 2 deaths (TL: 0.2%) of dengue were reported in Mauritius (830 local cases and 6 imported cases) and Rodrigues (261 local cases and 1 imported case).
