The Hygiene and Public Health service of the Ulss 6 Euganea Company reported this morning, August 18, to the Environment and Territory sector of the municipality of Padua, that it had detected a case of Dengue, transmitted by the tiger mosquito in a Paduan resident in Piazza Mazzini. The Environment and Territory sector promptly activated interventions according to the indications of the “Operational guidelines for the surveillance and control of arbovirosis in the Veneto Region – year 2024” which provides for the implementation of adulticide, larvicide and larval outbreak elimination interventions within a minimum radius of 200 meters from the place where the cases of contagion occurred, with the possibility of expanding this radius of action based on the environmental situation verified by the personnel in charge of surveillance.
What is Dengue Fever?
Dengue fever is a disease caused by the Dengue virus transmitted to humans by the bite of infected mosquitoes such as the tiger mosquito (Aedes Albopictus) which bites mainly during the day. It presents as a feverish form accompanied by severe muscle and joint pain, headache, skin rash, conjunctivitis. Carriers of the virus can in turn infect a tiger mosquito that bites them, and the latter in turn can transmit it to other people after 8-12 days through a
bite. It is therefore necessary to eliminate or at least drastically and rapidly reduce the presence of adult mosquitoes and mosquitoes still in the larval stage to interrupt the potential chain of infection.
The affected area
The area of intervention, identified by the Ulss, includes the area around Piazza Mazzini, 12 for a radius of 200 meters. In particular, the following streets are affected, in whole or in part: Piazza Mazzini; Via Giotto; Vicolo Bovetta; Via Del Carmine; Via Montona; Via Calfura; Via Beato Pellegrino; Viale Codalunga; Via Vendramini; Via Cristofori; Via Dalla Vedova; Piazzetta Folena; Piazzetta Forzatè; Via Tasso. The disinfestation interventions of adult mosquitoes will be carried out in public road areas at night starting from 9 pm today, August 18, tomorrow and Tuesday, until the end of the operations. The carrying out of larvicidal treatments and the removal of larval outbreaks present in private areas are planned starting from tomorrow at 9 am until the end of the operations. The ordinance dictates the obligation for all residents, condominium administrators, commercial operators, managers of productive, recreational, sports activities and in general for all those who have the actual availability of open areas within the affected area to allow access to the operators of the company responsible for the mosquito disinfestation service in the event of a health emergency, for the performance of larvicidal treatments and the removal of larval outbreaks present in private areas.
