Dendias dropped the “bomb” – Changes are coming to the term 2024-10-07 10:59:10

As announced, the minister, who was accompanied by the head of the GES, Lt. Gen. Georgios Kostidis, was welcomed to the camp of Lt. Gen. Dimitrios Psarros by the commander of the Artillery Training Center, Brigadier General Konstantinos Sirlantzis.

The swearing in was performed by the Theophilous Bishop of Thespion Pavlos.

Present at the swearing-in were the MPs Eleftherios Ktistakis and Georgios Moulkiotis, the president of the Central Greece Regional Council Loukia Theodorou, the mayor of Thebes Georgios Anastasiou and the director of GES/DPP Lt. General Ioannis Moustakis.

Also present were representatives of the Security Forces, the president of the Chamber of Boiotia Panagiotis Agniadis, representatives of the Apostrata and Reserve Officers Associations of the area and relatives of the recruits.

“The young hoplites today took the constitutionally prescribed oath of loyalty and devotion to the homeland. An act of individual responsibility towards the defense of the security of the Greek citizens, that is, the defense of the freedom of Greece” said N. Dendias in his greeting.

“I would like to say that tenure is not a simple obligation. It is a debt and an honor” he underlined and added that “The service of citizens as soldiers in the homeland is a timeless value choice of Hellenism. And that is why we parents stand up to our children with pride today. I understand the pride, as I understand any concerns you may have.”

“Tenancy, that is, the offering of time by young people to their homeland, must evolve to serve the modern security needs of our homeland. And, also, to be useful for young people” pointed out Mr. Dendias.

“That is why we are pushing for significant changes, both in the tenure and the reserve. The term of drudgery must be transformed into a term of substance. In one term an opportunity for both the homeland and the recruit. The soldier will be able to acquire skills useful for the Armed Forces, but also useful for him,” explained the Minister of National Defense.

“This is an opportunity to have a well-trained soldier, who will be able, if he so chooses, that is on a voluntary basis, to be transferred from the Armed Forces at regular intervals” added Mr. Dendias.

“In the next 24 months, as part of the implementation of the “Agenda 2030″, military service is changing. It will be an integrated process of acquiring extensive basic operational knowledge but also developing special skills” he emphasized and added that “We will focus, in principle, on intensive operational training, but the soldiers will acquire knowledge that will make them ready for modern challenges. With the development of horizontal skills, necessary for survival in the context of modern businesses, as well as certified specialties”.

“We are in constant contact with the employer organizations so that the skills that the young people in the army will acquire correspond to the needs of the modern market” pointed out the Minister of National Defense.

“We estimate that we will need approximately 36 months to change the reserve and to be able to start the implementation of the pioneering program of women’s voluntary conscription, so that our worthy professional staff can be supplemented by well-trained conscripts” underlined Mr. Dendias.

“The existence of the homeland has always rested and rests on the new generation of Greeks. Both tenure and reserve are an existential condition. They are a prerequisite for being able to defend the country if required. Or to put it in two words: They are a necessary condition for national independent existence” concluded the Minister of National Defense.
