Demonstrations around the world against the conflict in Gaza

PARIS (AP) — Crowds participated yesterday in protests, either for the Palestinians or for Israel, at commemorative events around the world on the eve of the first anniversary of the Hamas attacks against Israel, which sparked the current war in Gaza. .

On Saturday there were demonstrations in several European cities, including London, Berlin, Paris and Rome. Other events are scheduled throughout the week, with an expected peak today, Monday, the anniversary date.

In Berlin, near the Brandenburg Gate, hundreds of pro-Israel protesters escorted by police marched behind a banner that read “Against all anti-Semitism.”

With many Israeli flags flying overhead, some Jewish leaders chanted a song about “shalom” (peace), while protesters shouted “Free Gaza from Hamas!” and “Bring them home,” referring to the Israeli hostages.

Thousands gathered in Paris for a Jewish memorial event with speakers and artists paying tribute to those killed in the October 7 attack, and in support of those still in captivity.

Ayelet Samerano, mother of Jonathan Samerano, who died after he was shot and kidnapped on October 7 at the Supernova festival, said: “We are a united people. Together we are strong. No enemy will take us down. With this unity and strength, we will bring our loved ones home.”

In London, thousands of people gathered in Hyde Park. The crowd chanted “Bring them home!” and they waved Israeli flags and banners with the faces of the hostages still held by Hamas.

Meanwhile, people took to the streets from Pakistan to Morocco in massive pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

In Rabat, Morocco’s capital, thousands marched in front of Parliament and called on the government to revoke its 2020 agreement that formalized the country’s ties with Israel.

Casablanca’s Abdelilah Miftah said Palestinians and Lebanese now face “Israeli arrogance.”

“Israel is not respecting any laws and is waging an aggressive war against them,” Miftah said.

The protest in Rabat was one of the largest in months. The Moroccan government has spoken out against the war in Gaza, but maintains ties with Israel.

In the southern Pakistani city of Karachi, the country’s largest religious political party, Jamaat-e-Islami, organized a huge pro-Palestinian rally.

In Australia, thousands of people marched in support of the Palestinians and Lebanon in several cities, and a pro-Israel rally was also held in Melbourne.

“We feel like we didn’t do anything to deserve this,” said Jeremy Wenstein, one of the participants. “We are just supporting our brothers and sisters who are fighting the war.”

Security forces raised the alert level in major cities amid concerns that the escalating conflict could inspire new terrorist attacks in Europe or that some of the protests could turn violent.

On Sunday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her “total solidarity” with police, a day after security forces used tear gas and water cannon to disperse violent protesters in Rome.

Meloni strongly condemned the clashes between a few pro-Palestinian protesters and officers. Four protesters and 30 police officers were injured in Saturday’s demonstrations.

During the Angelus prayer from the Vatican, Pope Francis made a new call for peace “on all fronts” and urged his audience not to forget the many hostages still held in Gaza, calling for “their immediate release.” .

The pontiff called for a day of prayer and fasting today, Monday, on the first anniversary of the attack.
