Generally speaking, does an increase in demography go hand in hand with an increase in the employment rate? What are the relations between the two?
The evolution of the population can be understood by distinguishing between two phenomena, which may be concomitant but whose effects are different. The first is the increase in the number of people, and in particular for the labor market, the increase in the number of people of working age. If the supply of labor from companies is constant, this increase will tend to lower employment rates. The second is the increase in the share of people of working age in the population, which on the contrary is favorable to the employment rate because mechanically the share of working people is increasing. This is why we calculate employment rates by age group, in order to neutralize the effects linked to the structure of the population.
