THE General Chairperson of the Democratic Party, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono or AHY, said that it would be better if the presidential election (pilpres) and legislative election (pileg) were held separately.

According to AHY, the simultaneous holding of presidential and legislative elections has caused many legislative candidates who are contesting to be unrecognized. This is because the public is too focused on the figures or figures who are contesting in the presidential election.

“There were several considerations discussed at that time. First, yes, I agree that we want to provide enough space for the Indonesian people, for voters, including constituents in various regions or electoral districts to find out seriously or at least have a special concentration on the legislative election,” said Agus at the Democratic Party DPP Office, Jakarta, Thursday (25/7).

“Because if it is done simultaneously, the experience so far, it is almost certain that the focus of our society, or certainly giving the stage, space and attention to the presidential election. It will automatically be like that. Because the one who gets the most spotlight, the spotlight, because we are choosing the leader of the nation, the president,” he added.

He also does not want the quality of elected representatives not based on quality and track record. Because, so far, AHY believes that many legislative members are chosen by the public haphazardly.

“We should also choose the best people’s representatives from various aspects of course. We want good capacity, good integrity, clear vision and mission. This political party has an obligation to convey what visions, missions and programs will be fought for if the cadres or candidates from the party are elected as people’s representatives,” he said.

Previously, the discourse to separate the implementation of the presidential and legislative elections came from the National Awakening Party (PKB). The party led by Muhaimin Iskandar proposed separating the legislative and presidential elections so that political parties could prepare for the elections.

“So that our preparations are also clear, you know, this troop in this presidential election, how a troop must fight to win itself and must win its leader, try how to do it,” said Deputy General Chairperson (Waketum) of PKB Jazilul Fawaid at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Thursday, July 25, 2024.

The Deputy Chairman of the MPR said that the 2024 Election which was carried out simultaneously made the public focus on the presidential election. This made the public not discuss the vision and mission of the legislative candidates (caleg). (Z-6)
