Democratizing Municipal Councils: Call for Hearings and Audit by Supervisory Authority

2023-09-13 08:19:00

Hearings of personnel managers are requested, as well as an audit by the supervisory authority. A council was already planned for September 19. “A third of the councilors approved our request, and the mayor must therefore convene our council,” assures opposition councilor Taoufik Hamzaoui (Ecolo). The latter categorically refuses that the points be added at the end of the ordinary council. “The council will be long, and may end at 1 a.m. Now these are not points to be addressed tiredly. We need a calm debate.”

In addition to personnel issues, the opposition is demanding that Catherine Moureaux stop chairing the municipal council. In many Brussels entities, the presidency of the sessions is ensured by an advisor of the majority without executive mandate. In Molenbeek, on the other hand, as in Etterbeek and many municipalities in Wallonia, the mayor chairs the assembly and therefore distributes the floor.

“Catherine Moureaux is killing the democratic debate in Molenbeek,” laments Taoufik Hamzaoui. “She is judge and jury. She is not neutral in her position and must give way. This would allow for a calm debate to let the opposition express itself.”

This Monday, we mentioned as a reminder the resignation of the acting municipal secretary. “The administration has become unmanageable,” she lamented. In July, three unions denounced a “toxic work atmosphere” and “political interference”.
