MEXICO CITY.- This Tuesday, the United States Senator, Bob Menendezof the New Jersey Democratic PartyIt was declared guilty of corruption charges related to the FBI’s seizure of 13 gold bars, nearly $500,000 in cash and a Mercedes Benz at his home.
Senator Menendez was found guilty after a two-month trial in New York. He was charged with 16 counts, including bribery, extortion, acting as a foreign agent, obstruction of justice and several counts of conspiracy. The senator pleaded not guilty in the case, as did his wife, Nadine Menendezwhose trial was delayed after undergoing surgery for a breast cancer.
Payment of bribes
According to prosecutors, three businessmen paid bribes to Menendez and his wife in exchange for the senator taking measures that would benefit them and the Governments of Qatar and Egypt.

According to prosecutors, those bribes included gold bullion, a Mercedes-Benz gifted to Nadine Menendez and more than $480,000 in cash, which the FBI found stuffed in closets, jackets bearing Menendez’s name and other clothing when the bureau searched her New Jersey home in 2022.
Two of those businessmen, Wael Hana y Fred Daibeswere tried alongside Menéndez. The third businessman accused, Jose Uribepleaded guilty and testified during the trial, which lasted nine weeks before going to the jury on Friday, US media reported.
The verdict came a few months before the election in which Menendez’s seat is at stake. Although the senator decided not to run for the Democrats, he ran as an independent candidate.
