Prosecutors asked the court to sentence independent lawmaker Yoon Kwan-seok, who has been pointed out as a key figure in the suspicion of money envelopes at the Democratic Party of Korea’s national convention, to five years in prison.

At the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Agreement 21-2 hearing at Rep. Yoon’s decision trial, the prosecution said, “He received an unprecedentedly large amount of 60 million won for the purpose of providing money and valuables to members of the National Assembly, and it had a significant impact on the Democratic Party leadership election.” ″He requested five years in prison.

In his final statement, Rep. Yoon said, “The party’s internal primary was an autonomous area, and I took advantage of a few remaining practices,” and added, “I missed the warning, ignored illegality, and made a big mistake as a result, and I feel very ashamed and devastated.” I admitted it and asked for leniency.

Representative Yoon was arrested and indicted on charges of receiving a total of 60 million won from primary campaign officials for the purpose of providing it to active members of the Democratic Party to help former Representative Song Young-gil be elected ahead of the Democratic National Convention in May 2021.

The prosecution requested three years in prison and a fine of 10 million won for Kang Rae-gu, a former standing audit committee member of the Korea Water Resources Corporation, who was also indicted on charges of being involved in delivering money envelopes.

The court is scheduled to proceed with the first trial sentencing of Representative Yoon and former member Kang on the 31st of next month.
