Demis Nikolaidis: “I’ve always had gay friends”

“I’ve never thought about it. Now that you ask me, I hadn’t noticed something. On the other hand, I’ve always had gay friends. I was never concerned about the other person’s sexual preferences. So I didn’t have that in mind. Answering after years, I will say that it was difficult. Because the standard of gays in Greece, especially where I live, was not correct.

It was a mistake and this is corrected over the years. It has been fixed and I imagine it will be fixed in the future and even more so. It was a problem. I imagine so. I can only imagine it. It may still be a problem now. Statistically if we get it, there will be. But they don’t dare to say it, because our society is not ready yet.

Football in our minds is a sport that is all about cruelty. And the wrong standard is to tell us that gay people can’t take part in such a sport, as if gay people don’t work out or are not strong, let’s say. Until some years ago even women could not play football. And here there is an issue. Women’s football is growing and we like to see it too.

This has not yet been overcome even in European football. It certainly has to do with our prejudices, which will also change. The most democratic sport which is football as I always say, it will be 100% democratic after this.”
