“If I had known this was going to happen, I would have told the victimized children to play with everything they would like to do in their lifetime, and to do everything they wanted to do. Mothers who lost children like her when they were born die every day, and Park Hee-yeong, head of Yongsan-gu, who should be responsible for the disaster, said she had a panic disorder and went out on bail. Does this make sense?”

Kim Hwa-sook, the mother of the late Itaewon victim Kim Hyeon-soo, wept. Three bereaved families of the Itaewon disaster held a sit-in in mourning clothes in front of the Yongsan-gu Office in Seoul from 7:00 am on the 12th. They said they would hold a sit-in in front of Yongsan-gu Office every day until Mayor Park resigned. The Citizens’ Countermeasures Meeting for the October 29 Itaewon Disaster also held a demonstration at the front gate of Yongsan-gu Office and the underground parking lot from 8:30 am on the same day, holding up signs reading, “Resign Yongsan-gu Office Chief Hee-young Park, who has no qualifications for public office.”

Mr. Kim said, “I didn’t eat anything, raised the babies beautifully and sent them out to society. Isn’t the state supposed to protect the children raised like that?” “Since the disaster, we have been living in a prison without bars. This is not simply limited to the mothers and fathers of the 159 victims, but shows the shameful reality of South Korea.”

Jo Mi-eun, the mother of the late Lee Ji-han, said, “Mayor Park was released quickly (from detention) even though he did not take proper measures in a disaster in which 159 people died in his district.” It shouldn’t be there, but it doesn’t make sense to go to work right away. Panic disorder is just an excuse, and I am concerned that he will come out and try to destroy evidence.”

District Mayor Park was arrested for mismanagement during the Itaewon disaster, but was released on the 7th following receiving bail from the court. He then went to work at the ward office the next day. The bereaved families of the Itaewon disaster went to the office of the mayor and protested, saying, “Mayor Park must resign.” Afterwards, Mayor Park did not go to work following paying annual leave on the 9th, and it is known that he also paid annual leave on this day.

The civic group Yongsan Civic Action also held a press conference in front of Yongsan-gu Office this morning and urged the resignation of Mayor Park.

Song Hae-jin, the mother of the late Lee Jae-hyeon, said, “The biggest change in Yongsan-gu last year when the disaster occurred was the relocation of the president’s office.” It is evidence that all administration of Yongsan-gu was directed to the president’s office, not to the residents,” she said. He continued, “Mayor Park, who abandoned the safety of residents in the eyes of the presidential office, has no right to talk regarding the trauma following the disaster.”

Lee Cheol-ro, secretary of Yongsan Civic Action, said, “Not only do I urge the citizens and Mayor Park to resign, but I will also hold the upper ranks responsible for the disaster, such as Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency Commissioner Kim Gwang-ho, accountable until the end. We will also do our best to find out the truth through the enactment of a special law.”
