DeLorean Motor Company has published the first images of the Alpha5 electric car, which will be shown to the general public in mid-August. The design of the novelty was developed jointly with the Italian company Italdesign, which created the look of the original DMC-12.
The Alpha5’s design pays homage to the original DeLorean with gullwing doors, multi-spoke wheels and rear window shutters. However, this is where the similarities between the models end. The original DeLorean came out in 1981 and has produced over 9,000 vehicles since then. The car received the greatest popularity in 1985, when the first part of the film “Back to the Future” was released on the screens of cinemas.
Curiously, the DeLorean Company, founded in 1995, has nothing to do with the developer of the original DeLorean, which was founded in 1975 by John DeLorean. In 1982, the company went bankrupt and for a long time was mainly engaged in the maintenance and restoration of already produced cars. DeLorean Motor Company is now run by Joost de Vries, an electric vehicle industry veteran who has worked at Tesla and Karma.
The original DeLorean was a two-seater, while the Alpha5 boasts four seats. The novelty also has a low landing, but the appearance of the car is devoid of the angular outlines that were characteristic features of the DMC-12.
From a design point of view, this is the right decision, since the appearance of an old car does not match modern aesthetics. Due to the low landing and streamlined shapes, the aerodynamic drag coefficient of the novelty is 0.23.
As for the technical specifications, the manufacturer chose not to go into details at this stage. It is known that Alpha5 can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour (regarding 100 km / h) in 2.99 seconds, and the maximum speed is 250 km / h. The energy source will be a battery pack with a capacity of 100 kWh, which will provide a cruising range of more than 480 km.
The specifications mentioned refer to the basic version of the Alpha5. Probably, the manufacturer intends to offer higher or lower performance auto options. The cost of the Alpha5 has not been announced, but it is expected to be in the region of $100,000.
