‘Delivery riders’ working for delivery platform companies were found to work 57 hours a week and earn 3.54 million won per month.
The Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade (KIET) released a report on ‘Industrial Manpower Policy Tasks in Response to the Expansion of Platform Labor’ today (2nd) and announced this.
This report is the result of a survey of 202 people whose main business was delivery agency as of the end of last year.
Their average monthly gross income (3.54 million won) was higher than the average monthly income of wage workers of 3.33 million won in 2021, but the cost of equipment rental fees and insurance premiums was around 1 million won per month, so the monthly real income was only 2.56 million won.
In addition, it was found that most of the survey subjects worked in traditional industries before working for delivery platform companies.
As for the reason for quitting their existing job, 33.9% answered that it was involuntary reasons such as business closure or restructuring, followed by low income at 22%, work intensity at 18.1%, and long working hours at 12.6%.
The types of jobs they worked before becoming a delivery rider were sales and sales positions (37.0%), food service (17.3%), general office jobs (13.4%), and production skills (9.5%).
The Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade stressed the need for a policy to help platform workers move flexibly between industry jobs and platforms, saying that the longer the platform labor that repeats specific tasks divided into job units, the more likely it is that labor competitiveness will weaken.
