In correspondence with the love and solidarity that Cuba offers to the world, during this Friday, donations of supplies and medicines were delivered to three health institutions in this city of Holguín, brought by the XXXIII Caravan ‘Pastors for Peace’, for four of the five eastern provinces included in its program.
Each kilogram, of the two tons of supplies and medicines brought by the caravanists of Pastors for Peace (IFCO) (founded by the late Reverend Lucius Walker), is the result of an extensive process of collection and purchase, throughout the United States, in permanent defiance of the economic, financial and commercial blockade that maintains and intensifies that country once morest this noble and heroic people.
Hence the recognition and gratitude issued by the directors and workers of the hospitals, Vladimir Ilich Lenin, Lucía Íñiguez Landín and Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja, as well as a representation of three children’s homes without family protection (medicines and teaching aids), upon receiving the donations, delivered by María Yis and two other representatives of the Council of Churches of Cuba, together with Lupe Isabel Fernández and Yamila Fernández, respective delegate and official of Ica p, in this eastern province.
Vladimir Ilyich Lenin General Teaching Hospital
Accompanied by her board of directors, Dr. Amalia Pupo Zúñiga, general director of the distinguished assistance center, first inaugurated by Fidel in the eastern region of Cuba (1965), upon receiving the donation, she thanked those who made it possible in times of so much difficulty and stressed that, despite those cruel limitations caused by the US blockade, medical services do not stop, because the country prioritizes them; there is a group of high morale and the unconditional support of supportive friends, such as the Pastors for Peace, in different parts of the world.
Whatever arrives always helps a health center that is the second in the country in size and level of services, said the director and added that, although there are currently 2,666 workers, the staff is 3,446. She pointed out that the maternal and child block has 800 beds and to the pride of the group, 79 percent of Holguin residents were born in the Lenin, since between 25 and 30 deliveries are performed daily.

Similar expressions of gratitude were expressed by representatives of the 2,789 workers who work in that hospital, which will celebrate its first quarter of a century next November because, as its general director, Dr. Luis Mario Carrasco Pérez, recognized, behind the hands that brought these resources to our country and those that make deliveries, there are many other hands and that cannot go unnoticed.
Lic. Porfiria Emil Pérez, head of nursing services and operational president of the commission in charge of receiving and controlling donations that arrive at the Clinic-Surgical, added that these gestures are always appreciated, because they have nine specialties and 625 beds, whose number of patients demands many resources, particularly expendable material (gloves, syringes, dressing and suture material, medicines, which are not always in stock.
In this regard, the director reported that, many times, part of these donations goes directly, the same day, to the operating room, because the blockade prevents obtaining many of those resources that are essential for a hospital like Lucía Íñiguez.
Pediatric Hospital Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja
Acknowledgments were also expressed at the Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja Pediatric Hospital.
Upon receiving the donation, Dr. Héctor Pupo Rodríguez, director of the center, founded 52 years ago, and Lic. Eiliana Cruz González, head of nursing, also expressed the gratitude of this group to those who see Cuba through the eyes of different geographical areas of the world.
The solidarity and humanitarian gesture of Pastors for Peace is also carried out by friends from different countries, including the Puentes de Amor project, directed by the Cuban-American Carlos Lazo, said Dr. Pupo Rodríguez and these gestures, however small they may be, contribute to saving lives and improving medical services in an institution completely dedicated to children, who deserve to live in good health, he said.
At the Holguin pediatric hospital, Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja (Tavito, el Moro, Médico), a combatant of the Rebel Army, who lost his life in Bolivia, where he was a member of Che’s guerrilla, is honored every day.
Finally, the representation of the Council of Churches of Cuba and Icap, in Holguín, delivered medicines and teaching materials to three homes for children without family protection, accompanied by Dr. Sandra Diéguez and the official of the municipal education department, Ana Cepena.
Present in each delivery, the spirit of the caravanists
This was testified by the representatives of Icap and the Council of Churches of Cuba, in charge of making effective the delivery of the donations brought to the Cuban East by the caravanists, coming from Oregon, California, New York, Minnesota, Washington State, Illinois Arizona, Maryland North, Carolina, as well as one of Canadian origin and another, Colombian.
Yamila Fernández González, an Icap official, informed that 15 of the 30 caravanists are women and the same number of them are coming to Cuba for the first time; the youngest caravanist is 20 years old and the oldest, 89.
The members of the caravans have had to face uniformed Americans, as recently happened with their leader, Gail Walker, daughter of Lucius, the reverend founder, but they have never intimidated and continue their actions in solidarity with the island.
Since their arrival in Holguín, the caravanists carried out various activities in this city and in Villa Blanca de Gibara. Since the 19th they continue their program through Guantánamo, Granma and Santiago de Cuba, where they will participate in the national act for the 70th anniversary of the Moncada events.
