Breaking News: Lawyers Take a Stand!
Date: November 3, 2024
So, dear readers, brace yourselves! We’ve reached a point in our legal life where lawyers are not just drafting wills or arguing over the last biscuit in the break room; they’re now staging a full-blown boycott! Yes, you heard that right! The coordination committee of all Delhi Bar Associations has chosen to abstain from work on November 4, 2024, and why, you ask? Because of a rather hefty spat involving a District and Sessions Judge and a bravely assaulted lawyer in Ghaziabad. Oh, the drama!
The Ghaziabad Incident: A Legal Telenovela
Picture this: A courtroom where tempers are high, and tensions are boiling over. On October 29, during a rather heated hearing, an exchange of words erupted between the legal eagle advocate and the formidable Judge Anil Kumar. And when we say ‘heated’, we’re not talking about a gentle scuffle over legal jargon—no, this was more akin to a wrestling match, with the police apparently added to the mix. Advocate Jagdeep Vats didn’t mince words, condemning the police’s actions. You know it’s bad when even the attorneys are calling for an inquiry, not for their client’s case, but for their own wellbeing!
The SCBA Steps In: Not on Our Watch!
The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has jumped into the fray, sounding alarm bells and wagging fingers like a disappointed parent catching their child in a lie. They’ve dubbed the attack on lawyers “a severe violation of rights and the rule of law.” Well, if that doesn’t get your legal blood boiling, what will? The SCBA’s resolution to demand an inquiry into Judge Anil Kumar’s conduct is a serious business. They’re calling for an investigation supervised by a sitting judge of the Allahabad High Court. It’s like a legal episode of “Judge Judy,” but with slightly more gravitas and significantly fewer gavel bangs.
Call for Action: Heads Will Roll!
In a bold move, the SCBA has not only called for inquiries but also for the immediate dismissal of Judge Kumar and the police officers involved. That’s right! They’re not just pointing fingers; they’re taking names, and they want compensation for the injured advocates. Because let’s face it, who could possibly defend your rights without a solid first aid kit—and possibly a legal team of warriors behind them?
A Call for Protection: Keeping Advocates Safe
In a world full of chaos and courtroom drama, the SCBA is urging for an Advocates Protection Act. They want protective measures for advocates and their families. How touching! One can only imagine the heartfelt debates among India’s lawmakers about whether advocates should have personal bodyguards or perhaps an armored car service for those particularly rough days in court. The SCBA stands firm in solidarity with the advocates of Ghaziabad, pledging to do everything short of a superhero rescue to ensure that justice prevails, even if it means reconsidering their own courtroom safety protocols!
So, mark your calendars, my friends; November 4 is shaping up to be a day of legal significance! And remember, if you thought the courtroom was boring, think again! Stay tuned as this saga unfolds—it seems like we may have more than just a casual dip into legal drama here!

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has called for a comprehensive inquiry into the actions of District and Sessions Judge Anil Kumar, with the investigation to be supervised by a sitting judge from the Allahabad High Court.
The coordination committee comprising all Delhi Bar Associations convened on Sunday and reached a unanimous decision to orchestrate a complete boycott of court proceedings on November 4, 2024.
This decision comes as a direct response to an alleged assault on a lawyer in Ghaziabad, purportedly incited by the district judge.
Advocate Jagdeep Vats, representing the committee, firmly denounced the police’s violent actions, specifically condemning the lathi charge against lawyers inside the courtroom as wholly unacceptable, according to ANI reports.
The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) previously issued a strong condemnation regarding the purported police violence against advocates within the Ghaziabad court premises, categorizing it as a grave infringement of legal rights and a direct assault on the rule of law.
Further expressing their outrage, the association criticized the conduct of the UP Police, stating that actions allegedly orchestrated by District and Sessions Judge Anil Kumar are intolerable and threaten the integrity of the judicial system.
The SCBA emphatically conveyed that it will not stand for any violations against the dignity of advocates. In light of the recent turmoil, the SCBA has called upon the Allahabad High Court and the Uttar Pradesh Government to enact swift measures for accountability.
Specifically, the SCBA has demanded a thorough investigation into Judge Anil Kumar’s conduct, to be led by a sitting judge of the Allahabad High Court, including oversight from the Chief Justice and the Administrative Judge responsible for the Ghaziabad jurisdiction.
The SCBA has insisted on the prompt dismissal of Anil Kumar along with the police officers implicated in the lathi charge incident, alongside appropriate compensation for the advocates who sustained injuries.
To avert any recurrence of such incidents in the future, the SCBA is advocating for protective legislation for advocates and their families, including the urgent passage of the Advocates Protection Act.
The SCBA is also pressing the Bar Council of India and all State Bar Councils to undertake essential measures to safeguard advocates’ rights, ensuring their ability to conduct their duties free from fear of intimidation or harassment.
In a strong show of unity, the SCBA has affirmed its commitment, stating it firmly stands “in solidarity with the advocates of Ghaziabad and pledges to take all necessary actions to ensure justice prevails.”

Escalation of the situation, the Supreme Court Bar Association has proposed the formation of an Advocates Protection Act, aimed at ensuring the safety and security of legal practitioners and their families in the face of violence and intimidation.
The legal community in Delhi has rallied behind this cause, with the coordination committee of all Delhi Bar Associations unanimously agreeing to boycott court proceedings on November 4, 2024, in protest against the assault on the lawyer. They are determined to send a clear message that such acts of aggression will not be tolerated within the hallowed halls of justice.
This series of events reflects a growing concern within the legal fraternity about the treatment of advocates and the broader implications for the rule of law in the country. As tensions continue to mount, the SCBA’s call for accountability serves as both a plea for justice and a warning that the legal world is ready to push back against any infringement upon its members’ rights.
As the situation develops, legal professionals and observers alike will be watching closely. Will the judges and the government heed the SCBA’s calls for action, or will this incident be yet another chapter in the ongoing saga of courtroom drama? One thing is for certain: the advocacy for reform and protection of legal rights is far from over.
In the words of a wise trial lawyer, “Justice delayed is justice denied,” and the legal community in India is firmly resolved to pursue both justice and respect for all its members—one protest at a time. Stay engaged as this story unfolds; November 4 is indeed shaping up to be a monumental day for advocates nationwide.
