Delhaize Protests: Staff Representatives Fight Against Access Restrictions

2023-06-24 09:35:57

UpdateCaddies placed in a barrage in front of the car park entrances and strikers in front of the store: the Delhaize in Waterloo is the subject, on Saturday morning, of a new action carried out in common front by the staff representatives.

In Walloon Brabant, the management of Delhaize obtained a new ordinance this week which prohibits pickets in front of stores under penalty of penalty. This decision is in force until June 27 but the trade unionists, relaying the refusal of the staff of the franchise, have decided to continue the protest actions all the same.

“We are always here”

“This order was shown to us by a bailiff on Wednesday, when we closed the Delhaize de Genval. So we’re playing cat and mouse to remind management that we’re still here and that the staff doesn’t want candor. There are also actions in all regions today”, indicates on the spot the permanent trade secretary of Setca Walloon Brabant, Christophe Bouvier.

A bailiff has the picket lifted

Management’s response was quick. Around 8:30 a.m., a bailiff arrived on the spot and told the strikers that a new court decision confirmed the ban on blocking access to the brand’s stores. The bailiff therefore had the picket lifted. Shortly before 9 a.m., customers could freely enter the supermarket.

Order valid until June 27

A new order was issued in summary proceedings this week by the president of the Walloon Brabant court of first instance. In the presence of the local police, the bailiff explained to the trade unionists the content of this order, which is valid until June 27 and has not yet been the subject of a third party opposition. The text does not prohibit trade unionists from demonstrating and they can therefore remain present near the entrance to the store. On the other hand, under penalty of a fine of 1,000 euros per person who does not comply with the judgment, the trade unionists cannot block access to the store.

Various actions announced

In fact, solidarity actions involving support committees formed by Delhaize customers are announced this Saturday in Brussels, Namur, Mons and Liège. These committees defend the right to strike for the personnel, and want to inform and convince other customers to refuse the franchising of the stores, via actions of boycott of the sign with the lion.
