Trade: 27 Luxembourg supermarkets will become “Leclerc”
LUXEMBOURG – The Delhaize group announces the signing of an agreement with E.Leclerc for the takeover of two hypermarkets and 25 Cora, Match or Smatch supermarkets in the Grand Duchy.

E.Leclerc is regarding to take over the Cora, Match and Smatch stores in Luxembourg, following signing an agreement with the Louis Delhaize group. According to a joint statement sent Thursday, two hypermarkets and 25 supermarkets and convenience stores are concerned on the territory of the Grand Duchy. The change should be effective “in the last quarter of 2023”.
Luxembourg has two Cora hypermarkets, in Foetz and in City Concorde in Bertrange. The twelve match and thirteen Smatch are distributed all over the country, from Esch-sur-Alzette to Wiltz, passing through Echternach, Gasperich or even Diekirch. The amount of the transaction was not disclosed.
An industry giant
The 1,200 employees of the Delhaize group in Luxembourg concerned will keep their jobs, guaranteed E.Leclerc, who intends to “strengthen its presence in a competitive European market”. “The E.Leclerc Supply Center in the Eastern region will strengthen and support Luxembourg activities,” the statement added.
A few minutes following the announcement, the OGBL union, the majority within the two groups, indicated that it was following “very closely the evolution of the situation in the two brands”
The Delhaize group had already sold, last week, sixty hypermarkets and 115 Cora and Match supermarkets in France to the Carrefour group. Leclerc, a new player in Luxembourg, is the leader on the French market, with 22.8% market share and a turnover in 2022 of 44.13 billion euros. It is indeed a giant of the sector which is regarding to land in Luxembourg.
