A first Delhaize supermarket, taken over independently, opened its doors today in Wallonia. There had already been one at the beginning of the week in Flanders. We know that the group has decided to franchise its stores. This time, it happened in Bouffioux, in the province of Hainaut. So how did customers and employees react? Has the store really changed?
“When you work for 31 years at Delhaize, you have the impression that you only know how to do that, so it’s scary“, proclaims an employee at the entrance. After months of struggle, anguish and questioning, Karine decided to stay and consider the future calmly. She and her husband have worked here for 31 years.
“We clearly saw that Delhaize would not back down, so we must move forward with the new boss, who knows the store well, we are lucky“, she explains. The buyer of the store has in fact worked for Delhaize for 21 years. The company has no secrets for him and this store was not chosen at random. “This store, because I am from the region, the positioning of the store is excellent. We are in a town that wants to revitalize itself“, explains Benoit Barbier, new store manager.
For the moment, nothing has changed: salaries and benefits have been maintained. The teams are still the same and the customers have remained loyal. “Currently, my behavior remains the same: I remain the heavy department manager for customers“, explains Marco Scurti, head of the fruit and vegetable department.
Customers are more mixed. “Franchise is always the problem, today it’s fine, and tomorrow it may no longer be fine“, explains a customer.
Only one worker out of 60 employees decided to leave the store to change career direction.
