In a forceful statement, Elisa Carrió, top leader of the Civic Coalition (CC), expressed her criticism of the omnibus law proposed by President Javier Milei. The political leader maintained that, despite containing reforms in aspects “that deserve to be debated,” the legislation grants “immense and inadmissible” powers to the president. In addition, he emphasized that the inflationary process is “pushing retirees into hunger and poverty.”
Through a statement titled “Within the Constitution everything, outside the Constitution nothing,” the CC argued that since its founding in 2001, they have rejected the delegation of special powers that put “the life, honor or fortune of Argentines” in the hands of governments or individuals. The position, according to the document, dates back to the Constituent Convention of ’94 and is not temporary.
In the same statement, the CC highlighted its commitment to the National Constitution and the division of powers as fundamental values, regardless of the government in power. They pointed out that They cannot “validate” the Decree of Necessity and Urgency (DNU) proposed by Milei, underlining the need to preserve the positive aspects through debate in Congress.
The coalition committed to collaborating to ensure that the legislative process respects the republican values established by the National Constitution. They announced that they will prepare public reports detailing their position and proposals on each issue addressed by the omnibus law.
It should be remembered that Carrió had sent a message to the president in December, requesting urgent measures for retirees. The leader of the CC expressed concern regarding the impact of government initiatives in this sector, highlighting the lack of concrete proposals to alleviate their situation.
