Delcy Rodríguez suffered an accident in Cumanacoa

The vice president was supervising with her team the damage caused by the overflow of the Manzanares River when a strong wind caused a tree to fall on them

President Nicolás Maduro announced on July 2 that the vice president of his government, Delcy Rodríguez, suffered “an accident” during her visit to the town of Cumanacoa, Sucre state. He stated that the official was supervising the damage caused by the overflow of the Manzanares River when a tree broke loose and fell on her work team.

“They stood under a mamón tree and a very strong wind blew down several trees. One of the trees fell on part of that team, part of the townspeople,” he said during a campaign activity.

According to the portal East PressThe governor of Sucre, Gilberto Pinto, and the mayor of the Montes municipality, Tomás Bello, and part of their press team were also injured in the accident. Journalist Ariana Agreda confirmed that they were transferred to the Clínica Oriente in Cumaná.

For his part, Maduro said that despite being “beaten,” Rodríguez is conscious and stable. Her brother and president of the pro-government National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, traveled to the state to check on her health.

Delcy Rodríguez arrived in Sucre on July 2 as part of a commission of ministers to address the state of emergency caused by the heavy rains caused by Hurricane Beryl near the Venezuelan coast. Previously, authorities reported two people dead and five missing, as well as hundreds of homes affected by the rising river.

“(We are) going to address the situation of water, lack of communication, housing and people who are still missing. Governor Pinto stated that eight communities in the Montes municipality were the most affected by the floods. Specifically, the sectors Barrio Blanco, Las Tinajitas, La Fragua, Las Moritas, Las Trincheras, El Palenque, Los Cedros and Antonio José de Sucre Avenue. All this for an estimated 25,000 people affected, who were evacuated by the security forces.
