President Nicolás Maduro announced on July 2 that the vice president of his government, Delcy Rodríguez, suffered “an accident” during her visit to the town of Cumanacoa, Sucre state. He stated that the official was supervising the damage caused by the overflow of the Manzanares River when a tree broke loose and fell on her work team.

“They stood under a mamón tree and a very strong wind blew down several trees. One of the trees fell on part of that team, part of the townspeople,” he said during a campaign activity.

For his part, Maduro said that despite being “beaten,” Rodríguez is conscious and stable. Her brother and president of the pro-government National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, traveled to the state to check on her health.

Delcy Rodríguez arrived in Sucre on July 2 as part of a commission of ministers to address the state of emergency caused by the heavy rains caused by Hurricane Beryl near the Venezuelan coast. Governor Pinto stated that eight communities in the Montes municipality were the most affected by the floods. Specifically, the sectors Barrio Blanco, Las Tinajitas, La Fragua, Las Moritas, Las Trincheras, El Palenque, Los Cedros and Antonio José de Sucre Avenue. All this for an estimated 25,000 people affected, who were evacuated by the security forces.
