Thousands of commuters use the Nordbahn every day, but those from Bernhardsthal (Mistelbach district) have an arduous journey to work. “Delays of ten minutes to one and a half hours are the order of the day. So if you don’t have anyone to pick you up, you stand at the station and wait,” says Elisabeth Adler, an affected commuter.
The reason for the delays is work on the track, which has been causing a lot of failures lately. Every now and then, trains even have to turn back in Hohenau an der March to make up for delays. Four years ago, a citizens’ initiative was launched to fight the problem. At least three fast trains in the morning and three fast trains in the evening should also stop, demands Elvira Führer, the initiator of the commuter citizens’ initiative.
Only one track in operation
The problem is that many of the accelerated international trains only pass through, although there is an urgent need to relieve commuters here. The expansion work would make matters worse, which means that one track is always missing and international trains and freight trains have priority. Only one track is currently in service on the route.
According to the ÖBB, the northern railway is currently being expanded in order to increase the capacity on the route so that more trains can run there. If there are delays or disruptions on the route, you have to pay attention to the overall timetable and make sure that the entire punctuality in the eastern region does not suffer.
Those affected should switch to the next train
In such a case, those affected are advised to switch to the next train, which runs at intervals of 30 to 60 minutes on weekdays. It will be another seven years before the expansion is complete. ÖBB is ready to talk regarding new connections.
