Delays and rescheduling of flights in Argentina due to union action

Buenos Aires.-Argentine aeronautical workers’ unions are launching a series of union measures on Monday to demand a salary increase, and there are significant delays at the Aeroparque in the city of Buenos Aires, which mainly affect local flights.

The Aeronautical Personnel Association (APA) and the Union of Senior and Professional Personnel of Commercial Aerospace Companies (UPSA) are holding an assembly from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. local time (12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. GMT) at the metropolitan airport, as a measure of force within the framework of a collective bargaining dispute, which will be the first of a series that they have scheduled in a staggered manner and in different airports in the country.

The unions claim that the deadline for compulsory conciliation, which the Ministry of Labor calls for, has expired without reaching a salary agreement with the companies and that their salaries are more than 70% behind inflation, which means that “a high percentage” of workers receive incomes “below the poverty line.”

APA Secretary General Edgardo Llano told Re radio on Monday that during the 20 days of mandatory conciliation there was “no communication whatsoever,” so he was candid and said that “it is very difficult,” because “one can be for or against the government, but there always has to be a dialogue table.”

Llano denounced that “there is no dialogue with any government authority” and that “there is no dialogue table where a solution can be found.”

UPSA Press Secretary Marcelo Uhrich added that “pilots are leaving to work in neighboring countries” due to these salary differences.

This strike mainly affects the service of the national airline, Aerolíneas Argentinas, which, according to reports, has modified the schedules of its flights for its passengers as well as the airports of departure.

Aerolíneas Argentinas is the leading airline in the Argentine market, but it is in the eye of the storm due to the open skies policy applied by the government of Javier Milei and its desire to privatize it in the face of the losses that the company has incurred since it was renationalized in 2008.
