For the past ten days, the situation has been tense at bpost. Several sorting centers have been closed following a social movement initiated by the CGSP. The sending of mail and parcels has been strongly impacted, and if the movement has ended following discussions between management and unions, it will still be necessary to wait before seeing a return to normal for the delivery of mail and parcels.
Bpost has taken stock of the situation. “There are no more pickets, no more strikers in the sorting centres. Locally, workers from the Visé distribution offices are on strike, says Laura Cerrada Crespo, bpost spokesperson. The impact of movement is significant. Sorting centers are faced with a significant accumulation of mail and parcel volumes. We deplore the serious consequences this can have on citizens. The impact is also considerable vis-à-vis businesses and online businesses. In Wallonia and Brussels, bpost has been obliged to interrupt and/or postpone the deposits and collections of products from professional customers (SMEs, large companies). Deposits and collections from institutional customers, independents or companies concerned have resumed.
It is therefore the commotion to arrive at a return to normal. “Hundreds of thousands of parcels still have to be sorted before being distributed by postmen who will be dealing with a large number of letters and parcels. We are doing everything to get back to normal. Even if the strike movements have ended, it will take several days to absorb the delays”, she specifies.
To achieve this, bpost relies on students who come to reinforce the teams during the summer, but has also hired temporary workers. It is also up to us that, on a voluntary basis, members of the administrative staff are invited to come and lend a hand in the sorting centers concerned.
