Rumors have spread that Macs and iPads with Apple’s next M3 chipset may be difficult to release within the year.
On the 3rd, tipster Rebegners (@Tech_Reve) claimed on Twitter that “there will be no M3 Mac or iPad this year,” and that “Apple delayed the release of the M3 to next year due to TSMC’s 3-nano yield issues.”
TSMC’s 3-nano (nm) yield problem has recently been reported through foreign media. According to a recent report by the EE Times, TSMC’s current 3nm yield is estimated to be around 55%. Yield refers to the ratio of non-defective products among products. If the yield is around 50%, half of the chips from one wafer are defective products.
TSMC is using the FinFlex process, which has improved the FinFET used in the existing 5-nm process, for 3-nm process to quickly stabilize the 3-nm yield. However, it is judged that the yield has not yet reached the original track.
Apple plans to manufacture not only the M3, but also the A17 Bionic chipset, which will be installed in the iPhone 15 Pro lineup in the second half, with a 3-nano process. If TSMC’s 3-nano yield is half, it is highly likely that Apple will first delay introducing the 3-nano process to M3 for the A17 bionic.
