Dejan Ferdinansyah/Gloria Widjaja Triumph Over Local Duo at 2024 China Masters

Jakarta: Indonesian mixed doubles badminton players, Dejan Ferdinansyah/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja, managed to beat the host’s representatives, Zhang Han Yu/Yang Jia Yi, in the first round of the 2024 China Masters, Wednesday 20 November. The creation of this victory cannot be separated from the motivation of those who want to recover from failure at the 2024 Kumamoto Masters event.

As is known, Dejan/Gloria immediately fell in the first round when participating in the Kumamoto Masters 2024 event, which is classified as a BWF World Tour Super 500 tournament, last week. At that time, Dejan/Gloria lost with a score of 19-21, 18-21 in 42 minutes to Japan’s representatives, Hiroki Midorikawa/Natsu Saito.

“After losing in the first round last week, we each prepared ourselves more. Rebuilding our mentality, confidence and self-confidence and then ensuring that it doesn’t drop again. We also want to always enjoy the game on the field. This is still a work in progress,” said Gloria after subduing Zhang/Yang when interviewed by the PBSI Media & Public Relations Team.

Now, when appearing in the first round of the 2024 China Masters on Field 2 of the Shenzhen Gymnasium, Dejan/Gloria successfully beat Zhang/Yang with a score of 21-17, 21-12 in 42 minutes. However, the match was still not easy because Dejan/Gloria faced fierce resistance in the first game.

Tournamentsoftware.com statistics show that overtaking points occurs quite often in the first game. Dejan/Gloria controlled the early points, while Zhang/Yang led several points after the interval. However, the situation only lasted until 16-17 because Dejan/Gloria immediately scored five points in a row to win the first game.

Entering the second game, the resistance shown by Zhang/Yang in the first game was no longer visible. Dejan/Gloria gained more control over the game and even scored five points in a row three times before finally securing victory. Regarding this, Dejan explained that the victory was created because he and Gloria appeared quite confident.

“In the first game, the opponents played recklessly and bravely. They seemed to want to give their best in front of their supporters. But thank God, we were able to overcome and increase our confidence in the second game,” said Dejan when interviewed by the PBSI Media & Public Relations Team after the match.

“In the second game, we were better prepared and more confident in our playing pattern. We got a lot of fast points because we continued to follow this rhythm,” he added.

“Adaptation to the field is also quite good. This is one of the best arenas in China that I have ever experienced. The arena is very big and the wind direction is normal. Very good,” continued Dejan.

Next, in the second round of the 2024 China Masters, Thursday 21 November, Dejan/Gloria, who are the sixth seeds, will face Danish representatives Jesper Toft/Amalie Magelund. Previously, Toft/Magelund successfully passed the first round after defeating Taiwanese mixed doubles, Wu Hsuan-Yi/Yang Chu Yun.

Dejan & Gloria’s Comeback Triumph at 2024 China Masters!

Jakarta: In what can only be described as a sporting resurrection, Indonesian mixed doubles badminton pair, Dejan Ferdinansyah and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja, proved that setbacks are just setups for comebacks as they took down the hosts, Zhang Han Yu and Yang Jia Yi, in the first round of the much-anticipated 2024 China Masters on Wednesday, November 20th.

Now, before we jump into the fiesta of rackets and shuttlecocks, let’s rewind a bit. Just last week, our dynamic duo took a tumble in the first round of the Kumamoto Masters 2024. They faced Japan’s Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito and, let’s just say, the scoreline of 19-21, 18-21 looked more like a bad hair day than a badminton match. In 42 minutes, they went down faster than a lead balloon at a birthday party!

But, as Gloria herself put it post-match, “After losing in the first round last week, we each prepared ourselves more.” I mean, who doesn’t love a good motivational glow-up? It’s like getting a pep talk from your mom right before an awkward first date. “Rebuilding our mentality, confidence, and self-esteem” is important, especially when you’ve just gotten whooped by a team whose names sound like they belong to a fancy Chinese restaurant.

The Match: A Drama in Two Acts

So, flash forward to the China Masters. On field two of the vibrant Shenzhen Gymnasium (they say it’s quite nice, I imagine it’s like the Ritz Carlton of badminton venues), Dejan and Gloria didn’t just show up—they strutted, and like peacocks, they put on a show! They claimed victory with an impressive score of 21-17, 21-12. It seems they really enjoyed this field trip, unlike that last one in Kumamoto!

However, it wasn’t smooth sailing right from the start. It was more of a wobbly kayak ride for both teams, as overtaking points happened like they were the latest TikTok dance trend. Dejan and Gloria controlled things early, but then Zhang and Yang decided to throw a little 16-17 scare into the mix. But, in true ‘never say die’ fashion, our heroes scored five points in a row to slam the door on that first game—cue the dramatic music!

Confidence: The Secret Sauce

As we transitioned into the second game, it was like watching two different shows. The pre-intermission tension morphed into a full-on action movie! Dejan exclaimed, “In the first game, the opponents played recklessly and bravely,” and bless their hearts, they tried. But by the second game, it became clearer than my morning coffee that Dejan and Gloria were in the driver’s seat, zooming past with not one, but three fabulous five-point streaks. Talk about hitting your stride!

“We were better prepared and more confident,” Dejan quipped, like a well-trained bard of badminton. And he wasn’t wrong. Their strategic rhythm was spot-on, paired with the arena’s favorable conditions—“big arena, normal wind direction,” he said, and I can only assume it was like a gentle breeze whispering sweet nothings of victory in their ears.

Looking Ahead: The Next Challenge

And what’s next on the horizon? Tomorrow, they’re set to face the Danish duo, Jesper Toft and Amalie Magelund, in the second round. After brushing off their own Taiwanese opponents, they’re coming in hot! Can Dejan and Gloria keep the momentum rolling like a well-oiled badminton machine? Or will it be another case of “goodbye and thanks for the fish”? I think we’re all on the edge of our seats here, folks!

So, let’s continue rooting for Dejan and Gloria as they serve up more excitement in this year’s tournament. Remember, every setback is a setup, and with a little spark of resilience, you can always put that lost game behind you—unless you’re playing Monopoly, in which case, you’ve got to get a hotel on Park Place to rebound!

Jakarta: In a thrilling first round match of the 2024 China Masters, Indonesian mixed doubles badminton pair Dejan Ferdinansyah and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja emerged victorious against the local favorites, Zhang Han Yu and Yang Jia Yi, on Wednesday, 20 November. This remarkable win was fueled by their determination to bounce back from a disappointing performance at the recent 2024 Kumamoto Masters.

Last week, Dejan and Gloria faced an early exit in the Kumamoto Masters, a prestigious BWF World Tour Super 500 tournament, where they suffered a hard-fought defeat to Japan’s Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito, concluding the match with scores of 19-21, 18-21 over 42 intense minutes.

After that defeat, Gloria shared, “After losing in the first round last week, we each prepared ourselves more. Rebuilding our mentality, confidence, and self-assurance was key to ensure it wouldn’t drop again. We also want to always enjoy the game on the field. This is still a work in progress,” a sentiment reflecting their commitment to improvement.

As they took to the court at the Shenzhen Gymnasium for the opening round of the 2024 China Masters on Field 2, Dejan and Gloria demonstrated resilience and skill, defeating Zhang and Yang with scores of 21-17, 21-12, in yet another 42-minute contest. The match proved to be challenging, particularly during the initial game where both pairs fought fiercely for dominance.

Tournamentsoftware.com statistics highlighted numerous lead changes throughout the first game. Dejan and Gloria initially took control, but Zhang and Yang briefly surged ahead after the interval. However, the Indonesian duo quickly rallied, scoring five consecutive points to clinch the first set.

In the following game, the Indonesian pair’s momentum grew as they gained full control over the match, displaying their improved confidence and tactical acumen. “In the second game, we were better prepared and more confident in our playing pattern. We got a lot of fast points because we continued to follow this rhythm,” explained Dejan after the match.

He further remarked on the favorable playing conditions, stating, “Adaptation to the field is also quite good. This is one of the best arenas in China that I have ever experienced. The arena is very big and the wind direction is normal. Very good,” demonstrating the importance of the venue and conditions to their performance.

Looking ahead to their next challenge, Dejan and Gloria, who are the sixth seeds in the tournament, will face the Danish tandem of Jesper Toft and Amalie Magelund in the second round on Thursday, 21 November. The Danish duo advanced after successfully overcoming the Taiwanese mixed doubles pair Wu Hsuan-Yi and Yang Chu Yun in their opening match.
