In the field of foot and ankle surgery, hallux valgus is the most common disease. No matter what age the patient is, hallux valgus may occur. The most common symptoms are redness, swelling and pain on the inside of the forefoot, as well as a deformed appearance.

What causes hallux valgus? Hallux valgus is a disease affected by multiple factors. Many reasons may cause the deformity of the big toe. The causes of hallux valgus in different age groups are not completely the same. Some are related to congenital foot shape, and some are related to inflammatory diseases. One of the most frequently mentioned external factors is “wearing high heels” because high heels have a greater burden on the forefoot. In addition, hallux valgus is also genetically related, so some patients also have other members of the family who have hallux valgus.

The continuous deformation of hallux valgus is closely related to the changes of the foot muscles. When the joint deforms, the position of the tendons of the forefoot will shift, which easily causes a vicious cycle of joint deformation. In addition, some patients with flat feet often have hallux valgus. This is because the shape of the flat feet tends to put improper pressure on the forefoot, which will cause the big toe to deform.

Hallux valgus itself is the result of an imbalance of muscle and bone balance. Therefore, once deformed, it is not easy to recover completely.

A 60-year-old female patient has been troubled by hallux valgus on her left foot for a long period of time. The shoes should be wider. She also tried some hallux valgus correctors. There may be short-term symptom relief, but it is painful. The situation still has not improved significantly.

Osteotomy combined with soft tissue reconstruction treatment

After discussion, she decided to treat with surgery, osteotomy combined with soft tissue reconstruction. About half an hour following the operation, the lady’s big toe no longer leaned once morest the second toe, and the shape returned to normal. You can walk freely following the operation without crutches.

Hallux valgus is like a degenerative disease. Once it occurs, it is difficult to look back. Therefore, it is recommended to face up to this problem as soon as possible and prevent its further deterioration. If you have entered a severe deformation, you don’t need to be discouraged. Seek the assistance of a professional doctor as soon as possible to discuss how to improve your quality of life.
