Defending Workers’ Savings: The Battle for the 6% Additional Contribution

A few meters from the La Moneda palace, specifically at the intersection of Alameda and Teatinos Street, a group of political leaders, led by the RN deputy, Diego Schalper, was deployed on the ground to deliver information supporting the idea that the 6% additional contribution be directed entirely to the workers’ accounts.

“We wanted to do this action for two reasons. The first is to call on workers, leaders and all citizens in the world of work to publicly demonstrate in rejection of the government’s poor pension reform and in defense of workers’ savings,” said the opposition parliamentarian.

In turn, the deputy complemented by pointing out that his actions were also intended to “establish a position and explain the reasons that move us to be once morest the government’s proposal.”

6% additional contribution

The event also had the presence of various local leaders, such as councilors Heinz Almendares from Maipú, Agustín Iglesias, from Independencia, and Sergio Mekis, from the commune of Santiago.

Everyone agreed that the Government’s proposal “puts its hand into workers’ pockets,” since it aims to pay for social expenses with contribution points. For this reason, all those who participated in this citizen initiative stated that in their opinion, giving part of the contribution to the State was “regressive”, “unfair” and “unfinanceable” in the long term.

PGU

Regarding the discussion around the Universal Guaranteed Pension, Schalper expressed his annoyance with the latest decisions of the Government, blaming President Gabriel Boric directly.

“We find it incredible that President Gabriel Boric presents indications that show that the Universal Guaranteed Pension is not going to rise to 250,000 pesos during his term, as he had promised during the campaign. That is, a new unfulfilled promise by the government is added. And not content with that, it also incorporates a series of conditions, stages and fine print to upload the PGU,” said the deputy.

Along the same lines, the parliamentarian criticized that the increase in the PGU comes “conditional on certain income, conditional on certain stages and where only in the sixth year is the 100% promise reached.”
