News hardware Defective PS5 chips arrive at cryptocurrency miners
Not all PS5 chips are created equal. With its stock of defective chips, AMD decided to create products dedicated to cryptocurrency mining.
This is an aspect that we talk regarding very little, but which is nevertheless very real. Not all chips are created equal. In a production cycle, there are processors that can exceed their limits… and screw-ups. The former sell for exorbitant prices in overclockers’ circles. Seconds often find a second life in products that are totally different from what they were originally intended for. The PS5, whose chip (processor and graphics card) is produced by AMD, is naturally one of them.
AMD is doing something new with missed PS5 processors
ASRock, a well-known brand for PC builders, recently unveiled a new product dedicated to cryptocurrency mining. It is a server element that can accommodate up to 12 AMD BC-250 cards that are dedicated to this task. For the moment, nothing in particular, except that ASRock was not known until then to be interested more than that in this avant-garde market.

VideoCardz has some additional information. The AMD BC-250 card would in truth be formed from the SoCs of the PlayStation 5 which did not pass the inspections of its lines. We are talking here regarding APUs which may lack certain cores, which may not support certain high frequencies, or which lack certain functionalities related for example to the audio signal.

This is not the first time that we have seen this kind of cards released on the market. Just for the SoC of the PS5, AMD has already put on sale its 4700S platform which takes it up while associating different components (such as RAM). The same thing happened

It’s just a relatively elegant and fun solution to not messing up chips that don’t pass all of the certifications required for consoles. And now a question might stay in your mind for a long time: is the chip integrated into your console one of the most powerful of its production, or the weakest?
