World number two Aryna Sabalenka ended Danielle Collins’ 15-match winning streak in the fourth round of the Madrid Open by coming back from a set down to beat the American (US) 4-6, 6-4 and 6-3.

Sabalenka’s victory on Tuesday (30/4) WIB took the Belarusian tennis player to her first WTA 1000 quarter-final this season.

Quoted from the official WTA website, Sabalenka, who is the Madrid Open champion in 2021 and 2023, is trying to become a tennis player who has won three times at Caja Magica since Petra Kvitova.

Sabalenka will face 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-finals on Wednesday (1/5) for a place in her first WTA 1000 semifinal since Cincinnati 2023.

The match will be a rematch of last year’s fourth round duel, which Sabalenka won easily, 6-3, 6-1.

Armed with back-to-back titles in Miami and Charleston, Collins, ranked 15th in the world, enters her fifth meeting once morest Sabalenka looking for her first win. All four of Sabalenka’s previous wins came on hard courts, including three at the US Open.

Sabalenka came out slow, quickly trailing 3-0 in the opening set. Collins utilized Sabalenka’s first serve percentage of 52% and only 33% on her second serve.

However, Sabalenkan found a way to get up and serve once more. However, with the Belarusian trailing 4-5, Collins carried out a very intense 45-minute set.

Collins hit 13 winners with 10 unforced errors, while holding Sabalenka to nine winners and nine unforced errors.

Sabalenka steadied her game through the early stages of the second set, with the key duel occurring in the eighth game.

Having dominated in the first set, Sabalenka’s typical aggression took over in the second set. He hit 17 winners and held Collins to nine winners.

Sabalenka continued her attack to break Collins’ serve in the opening game of the third set and consolidated it with her fourth ace to take a 2-0 lead.

Collins finally stopped Sabalenka’s streak of six games in a row by breaking to reduce the deficit to 1-3.
