Greenpeace managing director Alexander Egit received the Great Decoration of Honor for services to the Republic of Austria from Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) in the Natural History Museum Vienna on Thursday. Egit’s commitment and commitment go back to the 1980s, when he campaigned for the preservation of the Hainburger Au, said Gewessler, and he was also a co-initiator of the genetic engineering referendum and set up Greenpeace in Eastern Europe.
“He is one of the pioneers of the environmental movement,” said the minister. A strong environmental movement will continue to make its irreplaceable contribution “so that in the future we can look at nature not only in museums,” said Gewessler, referring to the location of the honor. In his acceptance speech, Egit once once more referred to the achievements of the environmental movement in Austria and the importance of a vibrant civil society: “The rise of the environmental movement was clearly one of the most important social developments of the last decades.” But he also warned of problems because “for far too long there has been blocking and delaying, relying on fictitious solutions and greenwashing.”
Alexander Egit has been Managing Director of Greenpeace in Central and Eastern Europe since 2006. From Vienna, he heads the Greenpeace offices in Austria and seven other countries. He has also been Chairman of Greenpeace Europe since 2018. Most recently, Egit initiated the establishment of a new Greenpeace office in Ukraine.
