After a year in Austria, the intention of women who fled Ukraine to return has fallen sharply.

This is shown by a survey of around 1,000 people commissioned by the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF). According to this, only 13 percent currently have concrete plans to return to Ukraine – a year ago it was 30 percent. The educational level of the expelled Ukrainian women remains high: 73 percent have a university degree.

Refugee women are less likely to want to return to Ukraine

For the study, 1,008 Ukrainian women aged 18 to 55 were interviewed online by the Austrian Institute for Family Research at the University of Vienna in March and April 2023. The results were compared to those of a similar survey conducted in early summer 2022.

Around a third of women already have a job

Further results: Just over a third of the women already have a job – despite the good level of qualifications, they are mainly employed as cleaners (34 percent) or in the hospitality industry (14 percent). This is followed by jobs in education (nine percent), in trade/distribution and sales (eight percent each) and in the health sector (seven percent).

56 percent of women without a job are currently looking for work

56 percent of women who are not yet employed are currently looking for work – primarily in the office (46 percent) and in the social (41 percent) and administrative sector (36 percent). A quarter of the unemployed refugee Ukrainians are currently not looking for a job – the main reason for this is that they first want to improve their German language skills (82 percent).

Ten percent of Ukrainian women already speak German well

Around ten percent of Ukrainian women can already express themselves well in German. Around 36 percent stated that they understood German well, but did not speak it that much. 45 percent understand some German, but can hardly speak it. The remaining ten percent have no knowledge of German at all.
