2023-07-15 19:42:00

National crude oil production fell by 9% at the end of May 2023 compared to the same period of 2022, standing at 652 kt (kilotons), according to the monthly report on the energy situation for May 2023, published on Friday, by the National Observatory for Energy and Mines.

This drop affected most of the main fields, namely Halk el Manzel which entered production in 2021 (-46%), El Borma (-17%), Ashtart (-14%), MLD (-31%), Cherouq (-28%), Ouedzar (-24%), Fanig/Bag/Tarfa (-19%), Adam (-9%), El Hajeb /Guebiba (-5%) and Miskar (-9%). Other fields, on the other hand, recorded an improvement in production, namely Nawara (+51%), Gherib (+29%) and Cercina (+34%).

The daily average of oil production fell from 36.9 thousand barrels/d at the end of May 2022 to 33.8 thousand barrels/d at the end of May 2023.

Natural gas resources (national production + tax package) also fell by 8% at the end of May 2023, to 1138 ktoe (kilotons of oil equivalent).
The production of dry commercial gas has indeed decreased by 11% and the royalty on the passage of Algerian gas has also decreased by 2% to 416 ktoe.

Moreover, the distribution of the total royalty between the royalty ceded to STEG and the exported royalty shows that the greater part is ceded to STEG (55%). During the month of January 2023, an overrun of the STEG levies on the royalty due to the Tunisian State was recorded and which is in the process of being regularized.

The tax package on the passage of Algerian gas decreased significantly during the first half of 2020, the pandemic which affected Europe and in particular Italy had a strong impact on energy demand and consequently , the quantity of gas transiting from Algeria to Italy through Tunisia.

Nevertheless, an improvement was observed from July 2020 and continued during the years 2021, 2022 and 2023.
Purchases of Algerian gas fell by 6%, between the end of May 2022 and the end of May 2023, to 851 ktoe. National natural gas supply fell by 10% to 1803 ktoe.
