In a note on the situation published Monday in Brazzaville, the Directorate General of the Economy (DGE) of the Republic of Congo noted a decline in the turnover of the trade in food products standing at 7.4%, or 26.797 billion FCFA (43.8 billion dollars) in the first quarter of 2023 once morest 28.945 billion FCFA in the first quarter of 2022.

According to the DGE, the general level of consumer prices in Congo should increase this year due to the persistence of the world food crisis caused by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

The DGE also justifies this drop by the concomitant decrease in sales of fish and meat, including the drop in household purchasing power. Added to this is a lack of foreign currency due to the strict application of the new exchange regulations in Central Africa.

At the same time, the economic report reports a drop in the production of wheat flour products, which are among the priorities of the food crisis resilience plan set out by the government.

“In the first quarter, the manufacture of wheat flour products fell by 23.7% compared to the level reached in the first quarter of last year. All the components of the sub-branch experienced a sharp decline of their production: bread (-22.1%), pastry products (-29.3%) and donuts (-29.2%)”, reports the DGE.

According to the DGE, this note on the situation will allow economic decisions to be taken by public authorities, development partners as well as national and foreign operators.

It also makes it possible to assess the execution of certain socio-economic programs included in the National Development Plan 2022-2026 and the Economic and Financial Program under discussion with the International Monetary Fund.
