Days ago, a three-year-old girl was brutally raped in the country, sparking huge protests. Following this, the government decided to impose additional punishment on the perpetrators. The new law stipulates that in addition to imprisonment, the accused will be subjected to sterilization. This will be done at the end of the sentence.
At the same time, the Peruvian Congress must pass a new bill if the new law is to come into force. In the meantime, there have been suggestions that the death penalty should be imposed on the accused instead of sterilization.
Women’s organizations across the country have also criticized the new proposal. The women leaders said they were saddened that the government did not understand what sexual harassment was.
