Silicon Valley has lost one of its stars. Susan Wojcicki, former CEO of YouTube, died of cancer last Friday at the age of 56. She had stepped down from her role in February 2023 to “step back from my role as head of YouTube and start a new chapter focused on my family, my health and my personal projects that I am passionate about,” she wrote to her employees.
Tech insiders have been pouring in over the weekend since her husband announced her death. “Incredibly saddened by the loss of my dear friend Susan Wojcicki after a two-year battle with cancer. She is at the heart of Google’s history, and it’s hard to imagine the world without her. She was an incredible person, leader, and friend who made a huge impact on the world, and I am one of countless Googlers who was better for knowing her. She will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with her family. RIP Susan,” tweeted Google CEO Sundar Pichai.
