Decent Wages: Michelin President Ensures None of Their Employees Paid Minimum Wage

At a time when Gabriel Attal wants to “discard” France, no employee of the Michelin group is paid the minimum wage, assures its president in the columns of Le Parisien.

Can we live decently on minimum wage? The answer is “no” for the president of the Michelin group, Florent Menegaux. In his company, no employee is paid the minimum wage, assures the manager in an interview at the Parisian.

To arrive at an acceptable salary according to him, Florent Menegaux took out the calculator. “We came to the conclusion that a decent salary should allow a family of four people, two adults and two children, to feed themselves, but also to find housing, health care, ensure their children’s education, build up precautionary savings, consider leisure activities and vacations,” explains the president of Michelin.

“When you are in survival, you do not care regarding others or environmental issues, you are reduced to animal instinct”, estimates Florent Menegaux in the columns of the daily newspaper.

“De-cardiardize”, the objective of Gabriel Attal

“De-cardiardize” France is precisely one of the objectives that the Prime Minister has set for himself. The proportion of employees on the minimum wage increased in recent years, increasing from 12% in 2021 to 17% in 2023, a jump of 5 percentage points in two years. But this is not the case for Michelin’s 132,000 employees.

“We have a much larger share of our workers close to the minimum wage than our neighbors, that’s a problem,” Gabriel Attal also estimated during his general policy statement.

“Employees are more engaged”

At the tire giant, salary partly depends on where you live. “We consider, for example, that the decent salary is twice the minimum wage in Paris, and +20% of the minimum wage in Clermont-Ferrand, at Michelin headquarters,” explains the boss to Le Parisien.

According to him, the group’s economic performance has not suffered as a result. “At the finish? Michelin remains the world leader in tires and is recording growth in its profitability,” praises Florent Menegaux. “Employees, when they come out of survival mode, become more committed, improve their performance and, ultimately, produce results,” concludes the Michelin president.
