Debunking the Need for In-Depth Maintenance: Are Solar Panel Cleanings Really Necessary?

2023-09-10 16:00:00

In a growing sector where companies now offer to clean your solar collectors, it seems, however, that in-depth maintenance is not necessarily necessary. In any case, this is what Roberto Manfredi, co-manager of the company SRM Global Technology, assures. “Cleaning your panels is never essential. It can be useful, but it is not the norm,” summarizes the man who has worked in photovoltaics for almost 15 years.

Is it still interesting to install photovoltaic panels in Wallonia in 2023?

Far from pushing his clients to take out their wallets as soon as they observe a slight drop in the performance of their installation, the Liège professional reminds that “everything (or almost) depends on the weather”: “You may well have the cleanest panels from Belgium, they will not produce more electricity if the weather remains cloudy. »

“Today, most installations are efficient and optimize the smallest energy source: you should therefore not remain focused on your monitoring and worry regarding the slightest drop in efficiency,” continues Roberto Manfredi. “Of course, the panels must be clean to capture the sun’s rays, but the rain is more than enough to wash away the vast majority of dirt that might stick to them. » Like leaves or pollen, for example.

Unhooking of photovoltaic panel inverters: a problem and no solution

And for those who would still like to polish their panels? “They must go regarding it the same way they clean their windows,” assures the co-manager of SRM Global Technology. “Water, dishwashing liquid, a little elbow grease and you’re good to go. »

With an average lifespan estimated between 25 and 30 years, solar panels are designed to withstand bad weather. “We can really compare them to windows. If hail falls on it with violence, it may cause an impact similar to that of a stone on a windshield. But it remains rare,” slips Roberto Manfredi, more worried regarding the inverters. “We are seeing problems more often with these devices. People want to do the right thing by locking them in a small cupboard, but this is not recommended. For what ? Because an inverter works like a laptop: electronic components heat up when they are used. If you confine the device in a box, you increase the risk of breakdown. » To the wise.
