Debunking the Myth: The Truth About the Modern Coronavirus and Cold Medicine Treatment

2024-01-15 12:18:00

The information that the modern coronavirus was known back in the twentieth century and was then treated with cold medicines is not true. Virologist and infectious disease specialist Nikolai Malyshev told URA.RU regarding this.

Publications have spread on social networks that coronavirus in a form familiar to everyone existed back in 1976 and then it was treated with conventional cold medications. Such posts are supported by an excerpt from an old newspaper. But this information is not true. URA.RU became aware of this as part of a joint project with Noodles Media to refute fakes.

“The modern coronavirus did not exist then. There are four other coronaviruses that have been very common. They proceeded like ordinary respiratory infections. Therefore, they did not pose any problems,” Malyshev told the agency.

The virologist also noted that in the last century, coronaviruses might actually be treated with conventional cold medicines. This is explained by the fact that they were not identical to modern strains and were mild in patients.
