Debunking the Myth of Drugged Needle Pricks: Understanding Festive Discomfort

At festivals, parties, nightclubs and even Belgian Pride last year, dozens of people filed complaints claiming to have been pricked by a syringe. The federal police carried out several investigations and according to their conclusions, no one was drugged.

“In most cases, a blood and/or urine sample was taken from the people reporting the report, but no unexplained traces of psychoactive substances were found in these samples”says the federal police.

So what happened? These people actually felt bad. “Suffocation, dizziness, headaches, sometimes tremors, …. They had the impression of having been drugged. But you should know that discomfort is relatively frequent in a festive environment”, says Michaël Hogge, epidemiological project manager for Eurotox.

Heat, crowds, alcohol: conditions conducive to discomfort. For this specialist, it is a collective fear that has taken hold of part of the population…including in the neighboring countries of Belgium. “Social fear, urban legend,… which crystallized due to all the factors I mentioned. Post-covid factors with a population of relatively vulnerable young people. And loss of bearings in the festive environment”, add Michaël Hogge.

Drugging someone in this way is also unlikely. “It’s not discreet. A fortiori, in a festive environment, there is social control that is exercised. It’s an invasive act so you realize it instantly. Not all products are necessarily injectable or else it would take too large quantities via this mode of administration”concludes Michaël Hogge.

However, victims have indeed been stung with various tools, but without the administration of drugs: the perpetrators wishing to add fear or take revenge using this highly publicized phenomenon.
