It was widely talked about in 2020. Hydroxychloroquine, presented by Professor Didier Raoult as a treatment for minor covid-19 infections, would in reality be more dangerous than beneficial, according to the conclusions of a French study.

Published in the February edition of an international pharmacology journal, the work of several French researchers establishes causality between the administration of hydroxychloroquine and the deaths of 17,000 people occurring in six countries (France, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Turkey and the United States ). According to the authors of the study, the molecule is linked to 200 deaths during the first wave of covid-19 in France alone, in spring 2020.
Wrongly presented by Professor Didier Raoult as an effective treatment against covid, the drug initially used against malaria has been prescribed massively in many countries. However, as of 2021, several studies have highlighted the ineffectiveness of hydroxychloroquine in this indication.
Quickly banned in Luxembourg
In Luxembourg, a circular about the molecule was issued to pharmacists and doctors on April 9, 2020. It stipulated that the use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine should “be done as a priority in the context of trials ongoing clinical trials”, indicating that outside of this context, their use “carries significant risks”.

A little over a month later, at the end of May 2020, Luxembourg doctors were instructed to no longer use this molecule for the treatment of covid-19 infections. Hydroxychloroquine, however, remains indicated for other diseases, such as malaria. This shutdown occurred simultaneously in France, with the High Council of Public Health not recommending the drug.
These results illustrate the danger of drug reuse with low-level evidence for the management of future pandemics.
Study authors
A saving decision, according to the recent study by French researchers. The latter recall that, in a study published by the journal Nature In 2021, the use of hydroxychloroquine was associated with an 11% increase in mortality rate.
